Les Patterson

In his words. My creativity and imagination took off amid a scattering of Lego bricks. But those colourful plastic blocks were not the catalyst. Creativity runs in my blood as the son of creatives. Dad was a Graphic Designer, founding instructor and chair of Visual Arts at Sheridan Oakville. Mom worked in photographic at the University of Guelph and was a talented crafter.

My career in design and creativity started while attending the University of Guelph. I created computer programs and designed diagrams, maps and did other desktop publishing services for my peers and church. After graduating I launched Vertexxa, a visual communications company.

Soon a new canvass presented itself – the World Wide Web.  I quickly fell in love with the digital medium and silenced the in-house printing presses. Catapulting into the millennium, I grew professionally along as the web design field blossomed.  I gleaned experience in municipal, medium and small business, non-profit and even had the honour of creating websites for my alma mater.

In 2007, a freelancing alliance with Brent Barr’s KIRE Company transformed our companies into a full-service digital arts and marketing firm, Falcon Innovation Group. We continued to execute a variety of projects and I evolved to a team leader and mentor to several Conestoga College cooperative students. A very rewarding time, yet I found myself aching to get back onto the design stool.

As 2012 ended, our clutch of cooperative students had moved on and Brent pursued teaching and other business goals outside of Guelph.  I scratched the itch to return to design full time and became the owner of Falcon Innovation Group.  As lone wolf, I transitioned the company back to the role of a web design and print and Insignis Design was born in August 2013.

With the support of my awesome wife Laura, I am blessed to run the studio from the same home where I once sat amid those heaps of Lego bricks, along with our three hairy kids, Spike, Abby and Zoe. Together, we do what we can to make the world a better place by volunteering our time and gifts. We forward the fight against cancer, diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis that have played too large and wicked a role in our family life.

Downtime consists of throwing the ball for our “kids”, binge watching some Netflix or indulging my imagination in Minecraft. If you listen closely around Guelph during a harvest moon, you may hear the distant rustle of Lego bricks wafting through the night air.
